"Be Part of the fight Against Childhood Cancers" -...

This year's chilhdhood cancer awareness month has been launched with a call on all stakeholders to work actively to reduce the incidence of children dying from cancers.

It was noted that cancers can be treated if detected early and treatment plan is followed without interruption.

Individuals,  local and international groups, care givers, government,  Religious organizations, NGOs and all stakeholders have therefore been urged to support in the fight against children dying from childhood cancers.

The first lady of the International Central Gospel Church, Lady Joy Otabil, who was the Chairperson  and also formally launched this year's Childhood Cancer Awareness month, noted that early detection, treatment costs and rehabilitation of children with cancers would be more successful 'when more hands are joined in this venture.

She said everyone had a role to play and it was important for each stakeholder to rise up to the occasion and contribute their quota.

Mrs Otabil said she was aware of the challenges both families and caregivers face in treating with diagnosed with cancers,  adding that it was in view of this important quest that ICGC had for the past 15years provided financial support to the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

She thanked personnel at the Unit for their dedication and urged all relevant stakeholders to join in making the lives of children with cancers better.

Various speakers at the Launch such as the Director of Medical Affairs,  Dr. Frank Owusu Sekyere, who stood in for the Hospital's Chief Executive Officer; the head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit, Professor Lorna Renner; the President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana,  Dr. Hilda Boye, all noted the challenges parents whose children are diagnosed with cancer go through and the need for all relevant stakeholders to support to ease their burden.

A panel discussion with representation from healthcare givers, UNICEF, World Child Cancer, Ghana Health Service and parents of children with cancer identified some challenges families and care givers face and noted some strategies to adopt in order to create more awareness and get financial support for treatment.

They also underscored the need for partnerships with other organizations, the Media, support groups,  religious bodies etc, to educate the public so that children who have signs of cancers can be identified quickly.

There was a performance from some cancer survivors and a presentation to Lady Joy Otabil, in recognition of her and ICGC's support to children with cancers and the Paediatric Oncology Unit.

This year's Childhood Cancer Awareness month is under the theme: Joining hands in the fight against Childhood Cancers.

Childhood Cancer Society honours First Lady...

The Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana (CCSG) has honored Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the first lady, for helping to improve access to care for hundreds of children with cancer, thereby, improving their chances to cure.

"She singlehandedly built the `Sunshine Hotel` when she was approached by the Ghana Parents' Association for Childhood Cancer (GHAPACC) for assistance soon after she became the first lady of Ghana.

"She was also instrumental in getting four of the commonest cancers on the NHIS-Burkitt Lymphoma, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Wilms Tumour (Kidney), and Retinoblastoma(eye).

"CCSG is highly indebted to her, and we are honoured to have her with us at this Annual General Scientific Meeting(AGSM), Professor Lorna Awo Renner, President of the CCSG said at the award ceremony held in Accra as part of the annual general and scientific meeting, attended both virtually and in person by the participants.
